Irene was impossible to find in the city, on the asphalt streets, but if you went out to the lake or river, you would most likely see her white boat bobbing on the gentle waves in the middle of the water. She always did this: she rowed to the middle of the lake, lay down on the bottom of the boat, and just lay there. It was her place of safety and peace. Doubts, anxiety, and haste remained far away on the shore, and in the boat there was lightness, freshness, and sterility of thoughts.

The scent of lotus and river violets surrounding the boat made the young woman softer. When she stepped ashore, she was seen with a slight smile and a sparkle in her eyes. It seemed as if she had invented some kind of game, figured something out, determined something. These peaceful hours were necessary for her rebellious soul.
