Each of them had a guide to lead the way, and all Neiman could feel was the soft carpet of grass as she took an occasional step off the path and a whirlwind of scents: citrus, freshly sour bergamot, coconut, pistachios.

They began to play music, slow and rhythmic at first, then it became faster and faster, spinning into a frenzy. Neiman stopped, opened her eyes, which she had kept closed while dancing, and saw the people around her as they were: white and black, good and evil. Now she knew who was who, and everyone knew who she was.
