On Thursdays, the Ellipsis club staged just one dance performance, at the end of the evening. A single dancer, local or visiting, but always someone people had waited months to see. Only devoted fans came for the performance. They came for neither the club nor the music, but for that solo.

Everyone knew Alice was the guest that night. The most observant had already guessed it would be contemporary dance, something very tender. Peaches lay on the guests’ tables, and the room was filled with roses and irises. Ornaments gleamed everywhere, along with silver spirals. Each time, the owners used the décor to hint at the dance that awaited their guests.

When Alice stepped into the center of the room, the whole space seemed to turn around her. Every gaze settled on her hands. The air grew lighter, easing the stuffiness in the room. At the first chord, Alice raised an arm as though painting a peach blossom. Then she sank to the floor like a falling petal. This was more than a dance. Flowers and nature were speaking to you.
